How does a Port Filing Work?

To complete a port filing, the exporter or their agent will typically need to provide the following information to the port:

  • The vessel name and voyage number
  • Container number
  • The final destination of the container
  • The export declaration documents, including the commercial invoice and packing list

Once the port has received this information, they will process the port filing and confirm the container's booking on the vessel.

Note that port filings are typically required for full container loads (FCL), but may not be necessary for less-than-container load (LCL) shipments. It is important to check with the port or your freight forwarder to confirm the specific requirements for your shipment.
