Correctly classifying sneakers according to their Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes is crucial when importing into the United States. The HTS Code determines duty rates, free trade agreements, regulations, and more.
The classification of sneakers depends on two main factors:
You can refer to the HTS code database, specifically the category for "tennis shoes, basketball shoes, gym shoes, training shoes, and the like." This category covers athletic footwear other than sports footwear.
Footwear falls under Chapter 64 of the HTS database, making 64 the first two digits of the code for all types of footwear.
The remaining 8 digits of the code depend on the specific materials and features of the sneakers. Consult the HTS code database and use the country of origin to find the proper classification code.
Once you have the classification code, you can figure out the applicable duty rate. For expert advice on the HTS code and trade status, consider consulting an import-export specialist.
